The man was found hiding in the bedroom about 2:30 a.m. Monday after the children’s father noticed a chemical smell coming from the room, authorities said. Police said today that two rags with a strong chemical smell were found where the children had been sleeping and that a search of the suspect’s home turned up information on various chemicals and drugs, including GHB, known as the “date rape drug.”

Richard Lewis Marks, 49, of the 1900 block of Guy Way in Dundalk, is charged with an attempted first-degree sex offense against one of the children, a 9-year-old boy, and first-degree burglary in the incident Monday, court records show. He is also charged with two counts of first-degree assault, three counts of second-degree assault and resisting arrest, court records show.

Immediately after the arrest, a neighbor went to tend to the children and found the boy lethargic and confused. The parents told the officers they found two rags with a strong chemical smell where the two children had been sleeping. The same chemical odor was found in the children’s hair, police said, adding that the boy had a discoloration on his nose and that there were stains believed to be a chemical on the bed sheets.

Detectives also learned that a man had been seen by one of the children two days earlier in their back yard, but he fled.
