28-year old Vancouver resident Pete Costello was convicted on charges of conspiracy to defraud the government, and social security fraud. Mr. Costello, who began receiving disability benefits when he was 8, has been faking severe mental retardation since he turned 18. In all, he collected more than $59,226 in social security benefits. Authorities became suspicious of Mr. Costello’s mental condition when he was “videotaped acting normally” while contesting a ticket in traffic court.
