U.S. Chamber Helps D.C. Dry Cleaner Pay Legal Bills

July 25, 2007

Fundraiser Nets More than $62,000 for Victims of Frivolous Pants Lawsuit

From this Institute for Legal Reform press release:

WASHINGTON, D.C.-Businesses large and small joined together with legal reform advocates to help Jin and Soo Chung, the owners of a Washington, DC-based dry cleaner, pay some of the legal bills resulting from the $54 million lawsuit brought against them over an allegedly “missing” pair of pants.

“The Chungs epitomize the spirit of enterprise-building a small business, helping their neighbors, and living the American dream-until someone saw the chance to strike it rich playing the litigation lottery over a pair of temporarily misplaced slacks,” said Lisa Rickard, president of the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform, one of the event co-hosts along with the American Tort Reform Association.

During her remarks, steps from the front lobby of the Chamber where “The Spirit of Enterprise” emblem hangs prominently, Rickard shared the stage with the now infamous trousers, which were displayed with an armed guard standing nearby since the pants remain as evidence in the ongoing case.

“Unfortunately, the Chungs are not alone in facing frivolous litigation. Every day, all across the country, business owners large and small worry if they’ll be next,” Rickard said. “The Chungs have incurred tens of thousands of dollars in legal expenses as a result of this frivolous lawsuit, and they have lost countless nights of sleep to aggravation and worry. Although we can’t give them back their sleepless nights, we have taken a big step toward whittling their legal bills down to size.”

Rickard said that the Chung fundraising event has netted more than $62,000, with pledges still coming in. She also said that three-quarters of all small business owners surveyed recently by Harris Interactive reported that they were worried about becoming the target of a frivolous or unfair lawsuit. Many of them said that they have raised prices or have held back from expanding their businesses because of it.

In addition to helping the Chungs, the event organizers hoped to call attention to the broken lawsuit system that allows an obviously frivolous lawsuit to proceed, according to the Chamber. Even though a D.C. trial court harshly dismissed the suit, the plaintiff is expected to appeal.

The mission of the Institute for Legal Reform is to make America’s legal system simpler, fairer, and faster for everyone. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation, representing more than 3 million businesses and organizations of every size, sector, and region.

Unimaginable Tragedy in Connecticut

July 25, 2007

Excerpt - Read more at courant.com:

A judge getting ready to send Joshua Komisarjevsky to prison in 2002 called him a “cold, calculating predator.”

Equipped with night-vision goggles and armed with a knife, he would slash his way through screens into houses around his hometown of Cheshire, stealing mostly electronic equipment and petty cash to pay for a drug habit.

Steven Hayes had a record more noteworthy for its length than the severity of the crimes - decades of larcenies, burglaries and check forgeries. Hayes committed most of his crimes in the northwest corner, near his home in Winsted - far from Sorghum Mill Drive in Cheshire, where the horrific events that landed him back in court played out early Monday.

Although it is still unclear why they chose the home of Dr. William Petit Jr., one thing is certain, police say: The “calculating predator” and the career criminal descended to a level of violence that is almost unfathomable.

When the ordeal was over, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, 48, and her daughters, Hayley Petit, 18, and Michaela Petit, 11, were dead. The girls, sources said, were tied to their beds and raped, then left to burn after gasoline was poured around their beds and ignited.

Late Tuesday, the state medical examiner’s office said Hawke-Petit was strangled and her daughters died of smoke inhalation. Their deaths were ruled homicides.

William Petit was beaten almost beyond recognition with a baseball bat, tied up in the basement and left for dead, only to make his way out of the house and to a neighbor before his home exploded into flames.

One of the victims, 17-year-old Hayley Petit, was a top honors student, who had received an early acceptance to Dartmouth, among other top honors.

According to this Newsday.com article:

“The bribe payments included hundreds of thousands of dollars of cash delivered to Melissa Cockerham and others in bags and briefcases. Investigators say many of the payments occurred in 2005, and the money was deposited in banks in the Middle East and then moved to banks in the Caribbean.”

Rangel Entangled In Taxpayer Cash Wrangle

July 23, 2007

In another story from the “What’s in your wallet” department:

New York Rep. Charles Rangel has been raising funds from taxpayers and corporations for a center in Harlem to be named after a prominent U.S. congressman – Charles Rangel.

The Democrat has quietly raised nearly $25 million for the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service at City College, located in a four-story Harlem building and aimed at steering low-income and minority students into politics, the New York Post reports.

Last week Rangel – chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee – pushed through a $2 million “earmark” in the House to serve as seed money for the project.

Corporate contributions so far include $10 million from insurance company AIG and $500,000 from the Verizon Foundation. Rangel’s committee has jurisdiction over taxes and trade, including corporate taxation.

Some lawmakers consider it “unseemly” for Rangel to name a government-supported project after himself, according to the Post.

Rep. John Campbell, R-Ill., said: “I just don’t think it’s right for a member to donate taxpayer money to something with their name on it.”

John Stossel Interviews Michael Moore

July 19, 2007

Excerpt - Read more at townhall.com:

Michael Moore loves government.

OK, he doesn’t love a government headed by George W. Bush, but he believes that once the Democrats are in charge, government will do a better job providing health care.

In his new move, “Sicko,” he praises government-controlled health care systems in Canada and Europe. He suggests that Americans pay more for health care but have a shorter life expectancy because our health care is driven “by profit.”

He is wrong in so many ways.

First, life expectancy is no measure of a country’s medical system. Lifestyle and culture matter more, and Americans are different.

Interviewing Moore for an upcoming health care special on “20/20,” I said, “In America we kill each other more often. We shoot each other. We have more car accidents. Forgive me, more of us look like … you.”

Another Frivolous Lawsuit

July 18, 2007

Thanks to Michelle Malkin, another frivolous lawsuit is uncovered:

On a $5 dare from friends, 13-year-old Justin Porter climbed 35 feet up an electric transmission tower. Who was to know such an adventure might prove dangerous? 19,700 volts later, his mother, Anna Thebeau, is suing the electric utility, Ameren, saying it should have fenced off the tower against trespassers, should have posted a big warning sign on it, should have designed it so that it could not be climbed up, and should have insulated the wires far overhead.

I wonder if our favorite douchebag Roy “pants judge” Pearson will draft an amicus curiae letter on behalf of the mother?
